PRINCE HARRY REVEALS SOMETHING REMARKABLE ABOUT HIS LATE MOTHER! He says he sometimes asks Princess Diana questions and receives a response, sparking intense curiosity about his deeply personal experience. What exactly does Harry mean? Discover the emotional details and tell us what you think! 👀
Prince Harry is sharing how he still feels a strong connection to his late mother, Princess Diana.
During a released GQ interview, which was filmed during Harry’s visit to New York City in September, the Duke of Sussex, 42, was asked about his recent MasterClass on grief, where he shared that, after years of actively trying not to think about his mother, he now thinks about her “pretty much every night and most mornings.”
“I don’t go too deep,” Harry admitted to GQ’s Zach Baron, “I don’t sit there — and I probably should — but I don’t sit there and go really deep into ‘How am I feeling?’ ”
“It’s just a quick sort of like, ‘Wow, miss you. Wonder what the world would be like if you were still here. Wonder what my family would be like if you were still here,’” he shared.
“There are questions that I sort of ask myself,” Harry continued. “Sometimes there’s questions that I ask her looking for some kind of response — and sometimes I do get a response.”
The Duke of Sussex quipped that might sound like he’s “spent too much time in California.”
“But having done the work that I’ve done, there is a connection still with my mom that I really do feel her energy at certain times and certain parts of my life,” he added.
In his MasterClass, Prince Harry revealed that there’s one photograph of Princess Diana in particular that he looks to for connection.
“I can actually get eye contact from her, and there’s a cheekiness in her smile… I just feel very connected to her,” Harry said of the portrait, which was taken by famed French photographer Patrick Demarchelier.
“I find myself looking at her and wondering, what is she thinking about what I am doing right now?” he shared.
Prince Harry also shared how his relationship with photographs of his mother has changed over the years. In the early days after her death, he found it difficult even to look at them.
“Even though I had photographs in my bedroom at school, I distinctly remember not thinking about my mother because thinking about something that sad was never gonna bring her back,” he recalled.
For years, Harry said, he struggled to allow himself to feel happiness without Diana.
“I’d spent so long emotionally numb, to a large extent, because I felt disloyal and guilty for the possibility of being happy and joyful without her,” he said. “I felt like I had to be sad and I had to be emotionally numb in order to prove to her that I missed her.”
But eventually, his perspective changed.
“The reality is, what I discovered was actually that she just wanted me to be happy. And that was a huge mental shift for me. It freed me, and it gave me a whole different outlook on life.”
Harry said he also feels a connection to Diana through his charitable work, much of which reflects the causes she championed during her lifetime.
“Everything I do, everything I put my energy towards, I hope that my mother will be proud about it,” he says. “Trying to continue and protect her legacy, what I didn’t realize was the work that I ended up choosing, or the work that I ended up getting drawn in and attracted to, was so similar to the work that she was doing.”
“With grief comes this — it’s not so much responsibility, but this carrying of the person that you’ve lost throughout your life,” he adds. “There is an element of carrying my mother in me that ultimately energizes me for the work that I do.”
