Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are facing an unexpected neighborhood dispute as plans to improve privacy and security at their Ohio estate spark concerns among longtime residents. What began as a property renovation has developed into a debate about landscaping, infrastructure, and community relationships.

The couple purchased the lakefront mansion in Bratenahl, near Cleveland, for approximately $5.35 million. The property offers privacy and space, but proposed changes to its grounds have prompted neighbors to question how the work could affect surrounding homes and the area’s established character.

One of the most vocal residents has been Katherine Bolton, who reportedly has lived next door for 35 years. During local review meetings, she raised concerns about the proposed evergreen trees and the possibility that their roots could damage an aging sewer line shared by neighboring properties.

Bolton’s concern centers on an old clay pipe that serves more than one property. She told the review board that she had received an estimate of approximately $75,000 for protective work, raising questions about who might ultimately face the financial consequences if future damage occurs.

The prospect of planting around 50 evergreen trees near the sewer line became a major point of disagreement. Bolton argued that the proposed landscaping could create problems over time, particularly if roots reached the aging infrastructure and repairs became necessary.

Her frustration also reflects a broader concern about responsibility. Residents want reassurance that decisions made during renovations will not leave neighboring homeowners dealing with expensive repairs, especially if the new owners are not regularly present at the property.

Another longtime resident, Chuck Bauernschmidt, has raised concerns about changes to the estate’s vegetation. He reportedly presented photographs during a review meeting, questioning the removal of shrubs and trees and worrying about the effect on the neighborhood’s familiar appearance.

The proposed fence has also drawn criticism. Residents have discussed its height, design, and potential impact on wildlife, including deer that move through the surrounding properties. Some have questioned whether pointed fence tops could pose risks to animals in the area.

The disagreement has unfolded through Bratenahl’s Architectural Review Board, where officials have considered the couple’s proposed changes. These meetings give residents an opportunity to raise concerns, while allowing the property owners’ representatives to explain their plans and respond to objections.

The fence proposal initially called for a structure taller than the existing barrier. Following discussions, the design was reduced to six feet, and the fence was moved farther inside the property boundary. The revised fence received approval subject to specified design conditions.

However, approval of the fence did not resolve every disagreement. The landscaping proposal has followed a separate review process, with officials asking for revisions to parts of the plan, particularly the proposed trees along the rear portion of the property.

At an October meeting, officials raised questions about the mature height of the proposed trees. The board indicated that some planting options needed to comply with local restrictions, while the project’s representatives said they were willing to make adjustments and follow the applicable requirements.

The couple’s project team has also disputed suggestions that the property owners are ignoring their neighbors’ concerns. Representatives said changes had been made to accommodate residents, including moving the fence and preserving access points needed for sewer maintenance.
