Elon Musk Drops Key Detail: Why Cybercabs Need Pedals and Steering Wheels Before the Numbers “Increase Dramatically”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has offered a clear explanation for why some early Cybercab prototypes are being fitted with traditional steering wheels, accelerator pedals, and brakes — a temporary step he says is essential before the company can dramatically expand the number of robotaxis on public roads.
Speaking about the Cybercab’s unique development path, Musk noted that the vehicle uses an entirely new chassis, which means Tesla cannot simply transfer the vast real-world driving data already collected from millions of Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. “Because it is a new vehicle chassis, we need to accumulate driving data that is specific to the Cybercab before we can put a lot of them on the road,” he explained.
“Unlike, say, Model 3 and Model Y and our other vehicles where we’ve got a lot of vehicles on the road, millions of vehicles on the road, we don’t have that for Cybercabs.”To close that gap, Tesla is equipping a portion of the Cybercab fleet with manual controls. These retrofitted vehicles will be driven by humans to gather the precise miles needed to calibrate the autonomous system to the Cybercab’s distinct handling, weight distribution, and dynamics. Once that data threshold is reached and confidence is high, Musk said the scale-up will be rapid: “You’ll see as we are confident about that, the number of Cybercabs in cities will increase dramatically.
”The approach highlights a key difference between Tesla’s existing passenger cars and its purpose-built robotaxi platform. While Full Self-Driving software has benefited from years of fleet learning across conventional models, the Cybercab’s clean-sheet design requires its own dedicated dataset before unsupervised operations can expand at volume. This data-collection phase is expected to serve as the bridge between limited early deployments and the much larger presence Musk has long envisioned in major cities.For now, the sight of a Cybercab with a steering wheel is not a step backward but a deliberate, short-term measure aimed at accelerating the path to full autonomy.
As the miles accumulate and the system is refined for the new chassis, Tesla anticipates shifting quickly from controlled testing to widespread urban deployment.
