Jason Kelce Tries Sumo Wrestling in Traditional Loincloth, and Wife Kylie Has a Warning for Viewers
Jason Kelce is trying his hand at a new, unexpected sport.
The 38-year-old retired NFL star dipped his toes into the world of sumo wrestling for the latest episode of his Kelce Versus YouTube special.
And the former Philadelphia Eagles center didn’t hold back, fully embracing the traditions of the Japanese sport, including wearing a mawashi around his lower half.
“You wore the diaper,” Jason’s younger brother, Travis Kelce, said on their New Heights podcast.
“It’s called a mawashi. It’s not called a diaper,” Jason clarified. “This is something that’s been around for a very long time. So there’s a lot of … What’s the word I’m looking for? Rituals and things that are specific to the sport that honor the past of it and honor people that have done it or did do it in the past and are doing it now. The way they train, it was ridiculous.”
The revealing garment led Jason’s wife, Kylie Kelce, to give viewers of the clip a warning of her own on her Not Gonna Lie podcast.
“If you do check out the sumo episode in particular, just remember that when you see that little chicken ass, it is mine,” Kylie, 34, quipped of her husband, with whom she shares four daughters.
Jason’s interest in sumo came directly from his time with the Eagles.
“My job in the NFL was to move 300-lb. monsters or to stop them from moving,” Jason shared. “I’ve always wondered, ‘Hey, does offensive line play have any carry over into the world of sumo?’ ”
The experts Jason trained with praised him for having “the physique of a sumo wrestler” thanks to his pro athlete background.
“My belly is a little bit amped up,” Jason quipped. “I’ve been eating a lot of ice cream this summer.”
Jason later admitted, “I’m out of shape in general. It wouldn’t have mattered. I’d have gotten torn to pieces right there.”
After multiple days of training, dining on a massive plate of Texas barbecue and going several rounds in the ring with three different sumo wrestlers, he won one match and lost eight.
“I wouldn’t have won a Super Bowl at this, but I’m going with this was a success!” Jason declared. “There is some definite carry over.”
