Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Hollywood Empire in Crisis? Netflix Projects Stall, Key Staffer Walks Away as Their Showbiz Dreams Face a Major Setback
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle once arrived in Hollywood with enormous ambitions, promising to build a powerful entertainment empire capable of competing with some of the biggest names in the industry. Armed with lucrative media agreements, international recognition and millions of followers, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared ready to transform their royal departure into a highly successful business venture.
But six years after leaving their official royal roles and establishing themselves in California, serious questions are emerging about the future of their Hollywood ambitions.
With several highly anticipated productions reportedly remaining in development, changes within their production company Archewell Productions and an increasingly complicated relationship with major entertainment partners, the Sussexes are facing fresh scrutiny over whether their media strategy is delivering the results they originally envisioned.
The latest development has reignited speculation about their position in Hollywood, particularly after reports emerged that some of their Netflix projects have made little visible progress.
So, are Harry and Meghan’s Hollywood dreams really in jeopardy, or are the couple simply navigating the unpredictable realities of the entertainment business?
Netflix projects reportedly remain stalled
One of the biggest concerns surrounding the Sussexes’ entertainment ambitions involves their continuing relationship with Netflix.
According to a November 4 report by Page Six, two of the couple’s anticipated film projects, Meet Me at the Lake and The Wedding Date, remain in development, with sources indicating that there has been no apparent progress since March.
Meet Me at the Lake, an adaptation of Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel, has been associated with Archewell since 2023.
The second project, The Wedding Date, based on the novel by Jasmine Guillory, entered development later.
Both productions were expected to strengthen the couple’s position as entertainment producers and demonstrate that their company could develop successful scripted content beyond documentaries about their personal experiences.
However, the lack of visible production developments has prompted questions about when audiences might actually see the projects.
There is an important qualification, though.
An industry source speaking to Page Six stressed that lengthy development periods are normal in Hollywood. Adaptations often require extensive script revisions, negotiations with writers and other creative decisions before cameras begin rolling.
Consequently, the projects remaining in development does not automatically mean they have been cancelled or abandoned.
Nevertheless, the uncertainty comes at a particularly sensitive time for Archewell Productions.
A key Archewell executive’s departure raises fresh questions
Another development attracting attention is the departure of Chanel Pysnik, Archewell Productions’ longtime head of nonfiction film and television.
According to People magazine, Pysnik is leaving after more than five years with the company.
She was among the early members of the Sussexes’ production operation and played an important role in developing its unscripted programming strategy.
Her work included projects such as Harry & Meghan, Heart of Invictus, Polo, Live to Lead and With Love, Meghan.
Harry and Meghan reportedly praised her contribution, describing her as one of the company’s first hires and recognising her role in shaping its storytelling ambitions.
Her departure follows other staffing changes and restructuring within the Sussexes’ business operations.
While executive departures are not unusual in the entertainment industry, the timing has inevitably attracted attention.
Archewell has been attempting to establish itself as a sustainable production company, and maintaining experienced creative leadership is important when several projects are still moving through development.
There is no confirmed evidence that Pysnik’s departure means Archewell is shutting down. However, it adds another development to the wider conversation about the company’s future direction.
Netflix’s relationship with the Sussexes has changed
When Harry and Meghan signed their original Netflix agreement in 2020, the partnership generated enormous excitement.
The couple had just stepped away from their senior royal responsibilities and were preparing to build independent careers in the United States.
Their first major documentary project, Harry & Meghan, became a significant success for the streaming platform.
The six-part series attracted enormous international attention and became one of Netflix’s most successful documentary releases.
However, subsequent projects did not reproduce the same level of attention.
Live to Lead and Polo attracted more limited interest, while Meghan’s lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, generated mixed reactions and smaller audiences.
In 2025, Netflix did not renew the Sussexes’ original overall agreement. Instead, the relationship moved to a first-look arrangement, allowing the couple to develop projects that Netflix could consider while also exploring opportunities elsewhere.
The distinction is significant.
An overall production agreement and a first-look arrangement do not provide the same level of financial certainty or exclusivity.
It means the Sussexes must continue demonstrating that their ideas can attract investment and justify distribution.
Netflix also ended its business partnership involving Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, in March 2026. Meghan’s company subsequently continued handling the consumer products independently.
The changes have prompted questions about whether the couple can maintain their influence in an increasingly competitive entertainment industry.
Meghan’s lifestyle ambitions face a different challenge
Meghan’s ambitions have extended beyond television production.
Through As Ever, she has attempted to establish a lifestyle business associated with food, entertaining, home products and personal branding.
Her Netflix series provided a platform for introducing the brand to viewers, creating an opportunity to connect entertainment with consumer products.
However, the end of Netflix’s involvement means the business must increasingly establish its own commercial identity.
The challenge is considerable.
The lifestyle market is highly competitive, with established personalities and companies already commanding substantial audiences.
Meghan has international recognition, but recognition does not automatically translate into sustained product sales or long-term customer loyalty.
Her next challenge will be demonstrating that As Ever can attract customers independently of the attention generated by her royal connections and television appearances.
At the same time, the couple still have opportunities to pursue partnerships with other production companies and streaming platforms.
Could Britain offer Harry and Meghan a fresh Hollywood opportunity?
Another major development is the couple’s changing relationship with Britain.
After spending several years in California, Harry and Meghan have recently been spending an extended period in the United Kingdom.
Their changing geographical focus has generated considerable discussion about what comes next for their family and business interests.
A return to Britain does not necessarily mean abandoning Hollywood.
The United Kingdom has a substantial film and television industry, internationally recognised production facilities and financial incentives designed to attract entertainment projects.
Indeed, industry observers have suggested that a British base could create new opportunities for the Sussexes.
There has also been speculation surrounding Meghan’s potential return to acting, although reports about possible television roles have not always resulted in confirmed casting announcements.
A successful acting project could introduce her to audiences in a different professional capacity, separate from her work as a producer and lifestyle entrepreneur.
For Harry, documentary filmmaking and projects connected to humanitarian causes could remain important parts of his professional identity.
The couple therefore have several possible directions available to them.
Are their Hollywood dreams over?
Despite the recent setbacks, declaring the end of Harry and Meghan’s Hollywood ambitions would be premature.
Their first Netflix documentary demonstrated that they can attract extraordinary international attention.
They also retain valuable industry relationships, an established production company, significant public recognition and the financial resources to explore new opportunities.
However, their next chapter may require a different strategy.
Instead of relying primarily on the enormous attention surrounding their royal departure, the couple will need to establish a consistent record of producing projects that audiences actively want to watch.
Their ability to develop compelling stories, attract creative talent and maintain strong relationships with distributors could ultimately determine the future of Archewell Productions.
For now, their Hollywood ambitions are facing a period of uncertainty rather than a confirmed collapse.
The stalled projects, executive departure and changing Netflix relationship are developments worth watching, but none independently proves that the couple’s entertainment careers are finished.
The biggest question is whether Harry and Meghan can turn their international fame into a lasting entertainment business.
Hollywood has seen many famous personalities arrive with ambitious plans. Some have built successful careers, while others have discovered that public recognition alone is not enough.
For the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the next few years could be decisive.
Are Harry and Meghan simply experiencing the normal challenges of Hollywood, or is their much-publicised entertainment empire struggling to live up to expectations?
