An impressive performance from a #Chiefs rookie vs. the Raiders caught the attention of a franchise legend. 👀
The Kansas City Chiefs still need more out of their pass rush. However, Week 4’s win against the Las Vegas Raiders brought a positive development for a defensive line searching for answers.
George Karlaftis was playing with his hair on fire, finishing with six quarterback hits on Raiders QB Kirk Cousins. It was the most of any player on either team. Even so, rookie defensive end R Mason Thomas delivered the performance that deserves the most praise.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Thomas generated a career-high eight pressures on 27 pass-rushing attempts against the Raiders. That works out to a 29.6% pressure rate. He had just five pressures across his first three games combined, so Sunday’s output was a major leap.
Thomas hit a career high in snaps a week ago, and he appears to have topped that mark again in Week 4. Combine the extra playing time with the production, and he made real progress toward potentially becoming the Chiefs’ starter opposite Karlaftis.
The breakout didn’t come out of nowhere, either. Heading into the game, Thomas already led all rookie edge rushers with a 19.5% pressure rate. The volume finally matched the efficiency against Las Vegas.
His explosiveness and disruption were so apparent that they caught the attention of a franchise legend during Kansas City’s 30-27 win over the Raiders.
Chiefs legend Tamba Hali sends a message about the rookie pass rusher
Former Chiefs DE Tamba Hali took to X to share his thoughts on Thomas. A quick glance at his timeline shows he was locked in on the game, especially on the K.C. pass rush.
“I’ll tell you one thing, though,” Hali wrote. “R Mason Thomas is going to be a problem for quarterbacks in this league.”
Hali knows a thing or two about being a problem for quarterbacks. He spent 12 years in Kansas City, starting 157 games and recording 89.5 sacks during an illustrious career as a pass rusher for the Chiefs.
His connection to the current defensive line runs deeper than fandom, too. Hali has spent his offseasons training players like Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah, working specifically on hand fighting and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Thomas hasn’t joined them in the offseason yet, so he hasn’t had the chance to work with Hali in Kansas City. That could change soon. I’d expect Karlaftis and Anudike-Uzomah to invite the rookie to come train with Hali during the 2027 NFL offseason.
