🇺🇸 America at 250: Political Divisions Reach Their Deepest Levels Since the Civil War, Experts Warn

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, historians and political analysts say the nation is experiencing one of its most deeply divided periods since the Civil War. Growing partisan and regional tensions have spread into nearly every aspect of American life, with many observers pointing to President Donald Trump’s leadership as a major factor intensifying the country’s political polarization.
Experts cite widening policy differences between Republican- and Democratic-led states, the near disappearance of bipartisan cooperation in Congress, increasing political violence, and escalating clashes between the White House and Democratic leaders as signs of a nation under growing strain.
While America has weathered periods of intense division throughout its history, analysts argue today’s climate is different because the nation’s political conflicts are being amplified from the highest levels of government. Donald Kettl, former dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, said the current divide is unique because “the nation’s leader” is actively driving existing political disagreements.
Despite their differences, one point of broad agreement remains: many Americans across both major parties believe the country’s political divisions are likely to deepen in the years ahead.
